It's been a while since I've posted to my blog. After teaching in various schools this past school year and completing a mural with 5th and 6th graders at the Robert Fulton Elementary School on Chicago's South side early June. I got ready for one of my biggest challenges yet. Exhibitions galore. This summer has been incredibly busy filled with exhibits, one after another. It started out with one of the freshest exhibits I've ever been invited to participate in. Colbalt Studio one of the newest alternative spaces in Pilsen. Cobalt Studio is an artist run space. Studio artists, Adriana Baltazar and Antonio Martinez work separately and collaborate on occasion to produce thoughtful public art that is meaningful for it's communities.
More and more I have been drawn to illustration and have been rewarded with illustration gigs here and there. My most recent work is more graphically oriented. Here's the update on my shows and images of some of my newest and most recent paintings and drawings.
One of the best things about what I do for a living as a freelance artist and illustrator and teaching artist is getting to work on cool and exciting projects that are often near and dear to my heart and the other is collaborate with amazing and talented artists and people in the industry. I recently became reacquainted with an old friend and client of mine from when I had a studio in Wicker Park. Dian Sourelis is a graphic designer, director and principal partner of Brainforest, Inc. Design firm, a Creative agency located in Pilsen. We recently came across one another again. And she invited me to show at the Brainforest Gallery housed in the design firm headquarters. That is where I am currently showing along with illustrator Clare Roseann currently a graduate student at the University of Chicago. So check out their web sites and links.
There has been a lot of good stuff happening and certainly one of the highlights for me was getting to do a surprise exhibit organized by Arturo Avedaño director of La Llorona Gallery in Lincoln Park in the beginning of August with the illustrious Alfredo Matus, artist, curator and director of the José Maria Velasco gallery in one of Mexico City's coolest of coolest homegrown neighborhoods "Tepito". The other highlight is exhibiting this fall with two of my favorite graphic designers and illustrators, Chema Skandal and Eric J. Garcia. The cool thing is that they both live in Chicago. Chema originally hails from Mexico City and is one of the premier Mexican graphics and illustrator to come out of el D.F and is rapidly becoming a global sensation. Eric J. Garcia is originally from New Mexico but has been in Chicago quietly making a name for himself. An art educator, graphic and political comic illustrator, and tremendous draftsman.
Our collaboration exhibit is titled "Tigers, Totems and Tamales" Opening Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Oxalá Fine Art Gallery, 1653 W. 18th Street/ 6pm - 10pm.
